The Feeble Ones Are Necessary

This message is for no longer being able to do what the church is doing, and having been quietly reclassified from somebody who serves into somebody who gets looked after

Nobody told her. That is what she keeps coming back to. There was never a conversation.

For thirty-one years she was one of the ones who did things. Not the flowers, that was somebody else. She was the one who went. Somebody had a baby, somebody had a diagnosis, somebody's husband left, and she went, and she was good at it, and she was often the first one there.

And there was a fall, and then a hip, and then eighteen months of a knee that has not resolved and is not going to, and now she does not drive after dark and she cannot manage steps.

And she noticed, sometime last year, that her name had moved.

It is on a different list now. She is on the list that gets a call at Christmas and a visit when somebody has time, and the visits are lovely and the people who come are kind and she is genuinely fond of every one of them.

But nobody ever said: we are moving you across. It happened by itself, the way water finds the low ground, and by the time she noticed it had already happened and there was nothing to object to.

If your name has moved, come and sit down out here. Nobody in this article is going to look after you.

Paul reaches for a stronger word, not a kinder one

Here is a sentence in the middle of Paul's long argument about the body, and it is the one nobody quotes because it does not sound like an encouragement until you look at the word.

Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary.1 Corinthians 12:22

Necessary.

Now watch what he does not do. He does not say those members are still loved. He does not say they are still valued, or still part of the family, or still important in their own way, which are the four sentences a church says to somebody it has moved across a list.

He says necessary. Which is a word about function. It means: the thing does not work without this.

And he opens with nay, much more, which is a correction. He is arguing against something. Somebody in Corinth had been ranking the parts, and Paul stops them and says the ranking is not merely unkind, it is factually inverted.

That is a considerably stronger claim than the one anybody has made to her, and it is the one in the book.

You are necessary rather than accommodated, and it was already the stronger word. 1 Corinthians 12:22 is where that sits, in a correction rather than a consolation, and the same Spirit who moved Paul to reach past four kinder words for that one is the one who lets a woman on a porch hear what he actually wrote.

Nobody in that church did anything wrong

Let me be fair to them, because bitterness would cost her more than the list did and she is not a bitter woman.

There was no meeting. Nobody decided. What happened is that a church, like every organization, allocates by capacity, and when a person's capacity changes the allocation follows, and it follows quietly and quickly and without anybody noticing that a whole account of somebody has been rewritten in the process.

And the people who come and visit her are not condescending. They are her friends. Two of them she trained. That is not nothing and she knows it.

The trouble is only that a church can be entirely kind to somebody and still, without meaning to, communicate a complete theory of their worth by which list they are on. And the theory in that arrangement is: you were valuable when you could go, and now we are looking after you, which is love and is also, quietly, a reclassification of a human being into an outcome.

Paul is arguing against exactly that, in that chapter, at length, and he is arguing against it in a church rather than in the abstract.

You have a place that is not a function, and it was never held by what you could do. He promised it, in the sentence about the parts being set in the body by God Himself as it pleased Him (1 Corinthians 12:18), and His Spirit does not reallocate a person when a knee stops working.

The paragraph that outranks the teaching

Before anything else, this outranks everything above it.

Some people must not go without food, and at your age and with what you are managing this is not a footnote. If you live with diabetes, if you are pregnant or nursing, if you take medication, if you have ever had a hard relationship with food or with eating, if you are underweight, unwell, frail or elderly, or if you are simply not sure, speak to your doctor first and let their answer be the answer. There is no length on this page, no kind of fast, no plan and no schedule, and there is not going to be one here.

And nothing on this page makes the group version of anything superior, and nothing here can only be done by somebody who can drive after dark. Every single thing this site asks for can be done from a chair by a window, and that is not a smaller version being offered as a consolation. It is the thing.

Privacy is about audience and never about hiding, too. Telling your doctor is right. Telling your daughter is right. Telling whoever cooks in your house is right and it is basic sense. None of it fails anything.

You are fully inside all of this, and you were never at the edge of it because of your knee. Scripture settled that long before you got here (2 Corinthians 8:12), and the Spirit of God has never once been given out according to what anybody is able for.

If today is heavier than a page can hold, call somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, or a crisis line, and the emergency services if you or anybody near you is in danger tonight.

A picture, not an account

Picture a woman who ran a kitchen for a whole village for forty years and then could not stand at a stove.

She had fed everybody. Weddings, funerals, the flood year when the hall was full for eleven days. She knew what every family could and could not eat without asking, which is a kind of knowledge nobody writes down.

And after the stroke she sat in a chair in the corner of that kitchen because her daughter wheeled her in and did not know what else to do with her.

And within about twenty minutes she had told three people what they were doing wrong, from the chair, without moving, and by the end of the afternoon there was somebody standing beside her at all times asking things.

She was in that corner for nine years. Nobody ever put her on a schedule again. Everybody in that village who can cook, learned in front of that chair.

That is a picture, not an account. It is not a promise about your week or a claim about anybody's life. It is here because somebody needs to see that what a person actually is does not sit in their legs, and that a room will find it again if it is given four hours and no plan.

You are still carrying the thing itself, and it was never in the driving, and none of it left with the knee. It is written into Psalm 92:14, where the promise is of bearing fruit in old age and staying fresh and green, and the Holy Spirit carries that into a woman whose name got moved without a conversation.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it does not ask your body for one thing.

You are necessary, and it is already the word in the book, and it was chosen deliberately over four gentler ones. Scripture settled that in a correction Paul aimed at a church that was ranking people (1 Corinthians 12:22), and the Holy Spirit is not the author of a list that has you on the receiving side of it.

And the loss is real. Being the first one there was not just a role, it was most of how you knew yourself for three decades, and that is gone, and nothing on this page is going to tell you it was secretly a gift.

What is not gone is the thing that made you good at it, which never lived in the car.

One thing to do with your body

Say to God out loud what you used to do and cannot now. Then name one thing you can still do, and do that one thing this week.

Both halves, in that order, and do not skip the first one. Say it plainly: I used to go, and I cannot go, and I miss it. He is not going to be embarrassed by that and neither should you be.

And then the second half. Name one. It will be small and it will not look like the old thing. A phone call, an hour on the porch with somebody who needs it, the letter nobody writes any more, the young woman who would come if she were asked and has never been asked.

And then do it this week. Not offer it. Do it.

That is the entire action, it takes nothing from your body, and you can do it from where you are sitting. You are already equipped for the one thing, and it is already in your hands, and it does not need anybody's permission or a place on a list. Acts 3:6 says so, where a man gives what he has rather than what he does not, and the Holy Spirit is with you while you do it.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in your own voice, from wherever you are sitting. The standing to speak like this is yours in Christ and it is not issued according to what anybody can still manage. Scripture is the ground under it and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely willing, and what God does through one phone call, and when, is His, however He answers.

Quiet reclassification nobody ever mentioned, you are named and you are not God's arrangement. A church allocates by capacity and it does it without meaning anything by it, and His Spirit is settling that in me this afternoon.
Father, I used to be the first one there and I cannot go any more and I miss it. I thank You that You set the parts in the body Yourself and have never once reallocated a woman because of a knee. Here is the one thing I can still do, and I am doing it this week.
