Be Ye Warmed And Filled

This message is for having told somebody he would pray about it when the thing they needed was sitting in his own truck, and not being able to get the moment out of his head

There were two of them in the bed of his truck and he was looking straight at them while he said it.

Space heaters. He had picked them up in the spring for the shop and never used either one, and they had been sliding around back there for months.

And the man from two doors down, who he has known for eleven years and who does not complain about anything, mentioned in the driveway that their furnace had gone and the part was three weeks out and they had been sleeping in the front room with the kids.

And he said: I will be praying about that, brother.

And he meant it. That is the thing he keeps arriving back at. He was not being slick. He went in and told his wife and he did actually pray about it that night, properly, by name.

He also drove to work the next morning with two space heaters sliding around in the back of his truck.

It has been eight days. He has not been back down there. And every time he goes out to the truck he sees them.

If you have got something in the back of your truck, come and sit down out here. Nobody is going to make this worse than it is.

Somebody wrote this exact move down in a letter

James has a way of describing things that makes you feel he was standing in the driveway, and this is the clearest example of it in the whole letter.

And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?James 2:16

Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled.

That is a blessing. Read it again. It is not a brush off in its wording, it is a genuinely warm and religious sentence, and that is precisely why James picked it. Anybody can spot a cold dismissal. What he is describing is a kind sentence used as an exit, and the kindness is what makes it work.

And the phrase that follows is the one that has him. Notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body. The things needful to the body were available. That is the whole scenario. The verse is not about a man with nothing who says a blessing instead. It is about a man with something who says a blessing instead.

You are looking at the exact situation the letter describes, and it was already written down before you got here. James 2:16 is where that sits, in a scene built around a blessing rather than an insult, and the same Spirit who moved James to write it that specific way is the one who lets a decent man read it without falling through the floor.

Prayer is not the villain here

Now I need to be careful, because there is a version of this that ends up teaching people not to pray for things, and that is worse than the problem.

He prayed that night and the prayer was real. God heard it. Nothing about it was fake, and I am not going to let anybody use this passage to make a man cynical about intercession, because James certainly was not.

Here is the actual distinction and it is quite simple. Prayer is what you do about the part you cannot reach. The furnace part is three weeks out and he cannot make it arrive, and praying about that is exactly right and he should keep doing it.

The heaters were the part he could reach. And what happened in the driveway is that a sentence about the unreachable part got used to cover the reachable part, and it covered it so well that eight days went by.

That is all. It is not hypocrisy, it is not a character verdict, and he is not a bad neighbor. He is a man who did the right thing about half of it and then felt the whole thing had been handled, because saying a true sentence out loud has a way of feeling like completion.

You are not being called a hypocrite, and you were never once described that way in the passage. That sentence belongs to 1 John 3:18, where the instruction is to love in deed and in truth, which puts the two together rather than choosing between them, and His Spirit is not asking you to pray less.

The paragraph that outranks the teaching

Before we go on, this outranks everything above it.

Some people must not go without food. If you live with diabetes, if you are pregnant or nursing, if you take medication, if you have ever had a hard relationship with food or with eating, if you are underweight, unwell, frail or elderly, or if you are simply not sure, speak to your doctor before you go without anything and let their answer be the answer. There is no length on this page, no kind of fast, no plan and no schedule, and there is not going to be one.

And notice that James, writing about what religion actually consists of, goes straight to a cold house and a body that needs warming. Everything in this article can be done by a man eating three full meals today, and none of it asks anything of anybody's body.

Privacy is about audience and never about hiding, too. Telling your doctor is right. Telling your wife is right. Telling whoever cooks in your house is right and it is basic courtesy. None of it fails anything.

You are not one step behind anybody, and you were not behind because of anything physical. Scripture settled that long before you got here (2 Corinthians 8:12), and the Spirit of God has never once been distributed by medical criteria.

If today is heavier than a page can carry, call somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, or a crisis line, and the emergency services if you or anybody near you is in danger tonight.

A picture, not an account

Picture a man who kept a ladder in his garage for six years while his neighbor's gutter overflowed every fall.

They were friendly. They waved. They had the conversation about the gutter maybe four times in six years, always in the driveway, always with real sympathy on his side, and he always said the same thing, which was that it was a shame and that he ought to get somebody out to look at it.

He had a ladder. It was eleven feet away behind a door.

And the seventh year his neighbor's son came home from somewhere and did it in about an hour with a ladder he borrowed from somebody four houses down.

And he stood at his own window and watched it happen and understood something about himself that he had never had a sentence for before.

He went out afterward with two cold drinks and said, straight out: I have had a ladder in there the whole time.

And the young man laughed and said: I know. I could see it through the window.

That is a picture, not an account. It is not a promise about your week or a claim about anybody's life. It is here because somebody needs to see what it is like to be seen straight through and have it turn out to be survivable.

It is already settled that being honest about this is survivable, and nobody who matters is going to think less of you. He promised it, in the invitation to come and reason together (Isaiah 1:18), and His Spirit does not require a man to have been faultless before he walks down a driveway.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it costs your body nothing.

You are already the kind of man who prays for a neighbor by name, and that is already the harder half. It is written into the shape of James 2:16, which assumes the blessing was sincere and only asks about the thing in the truck, and the Holy Spirit is not standing in your driveway keeping score of eight days.

And eight days is not a scandal. It is roughly how long it takes anybody to get from a true sentence to a heavy object. The heaters have not spoiled. The house is still cold, which is the part that matters, and it is Tuesday, and the truck is right there.

One thing to do with your body

Go back down there and hand over the thing that was in your hand. And say nothing about the last time.

Nothing. No apology, no explanation of the eight days, no speech about what you have been thinking about. He does not need your interior life, he needs a warm front room, and an apology would quietly make the visit about you.

Just knock, and say you have got two of these doing nothing, and ask where he wants them.

And keep praying about the part three weeks out, because that part is still real and still not yours to reach.

That is the whole action, and a man eating three meals today can do it before dark. It is already settled that this gets made right without a ceremony. Matthew 5:24 says so, where a man is told to go and be reconciled and then come back, and the Holy Spirit is with you on the walk down there.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in your own voice, standing wherever you are. The standing to speak like this is yours in Christ and it is not issued according to how well any driveway conversation has gone. Scripture is the ground under it and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely willing, and what God does about the furnace, and when, is His, however He answers.

Sentence I used to get out of the room, you are named and you are not prayer. James described a warm and religious blessing used as an exit, and he described it exactly, and the things needful were available. In the name of Jesus I am walking down there tonight.
Verdict that I am a hypocrite, you are quiet and you are not God's word about me. The prayer that night was real and God heard it, and His Spirit is settling that in me now. I did half of it right and then felt the whole thing was handled.
Father, there were two of them in the back of my truck while I was blessing him. I thank You that the letter names the move without naming me, and that a cold house tonight is still fixable. Here I go, and I am saying nothing about the eight days.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
