Let Not Him That Eateth Despise

This message is for not doing what everybody else in the room is doing, and being able to feel the room quietly deciding what that means about him

He is not doing it, and he is not going to explain why, and the not explaining is most of the problem.

There is a medical reason. It is straightforward and boring and his doctor was clear about it, and there is no ambiguity anywhere in the situation.

What there is, is a room. About sixty people, and most of them are doing this thing together, and it is the third week, and there is a way of talking that has developed in that room since it started. Little references. A shared shorthand. Somebody says something at the door about how it is going and there is a particular kind of laugh.

And he stands in it and is not in it.

Nobody has said one word to him. He wants to be clear about that, because he can hear how this would sound if he told it wrong. Nobody has been unkind. Nobody has asked why he is not.

And he can feel the room deciding anyway. Or he thinks he can, and he does not know which of those it is, and not knowing which is its own particular exhaustion.

If you are standing outside what everybody else is inside, come and sit down. Nobody here needs your reason.

Paul wrote a whole chapter for exactly that room

Here is the thing worth knowing before anything else: this is not a new problem and Scripture does not treat it as a small one. There is an entire chapter about it and it is about food and it is about a church.

Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him.Romans 14:3

Read the structure. Two instructions, one in each direction, and then a single reason covering both.

Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not. That is aimed at the majority, the ones who are comfortable, and the word is despise, which means to look down on from a settled position.

And let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth. That is aimed at the other side, the one standing outside, and the word is judge, which is what a person on the outside does about a room they feel excluded from. Paul knows that the outsider is running a court too.

And then the reason, and it is one reason for both halves: for God hath received him.

Not: because you should be tolerant. Not: because everybody is doing their best. Because God has already received the person you are quietly assessing, which means the assessment has been overruled before it was made.

You are already received, and it was already settled before the third week started. Romans 14:3 is where that sits, in a sentence that ends both directions of judgment with one clause, and the same Spirit who moved Paul to write a whole chapter for a room exactly like his is the one who lets a man stand in it without bracing.

Whether the room is deciding is not the question you can answer

Now let me take the thing that is actually costing him, which is not the room. It is the not knowing.

He cannot tell whether they are assessing him or whether he is constructing it. And he cannot find out, because asking would itself be the strangest possible thing to do, and because the answer would be different for each of sixty people anyway.

That question has no floor. He can walk round it forever and it will never resolve, and in the meantime it takes something out of every Sunday.

Which is why the chapter does not answer it. Paul does not tell the Roman church how to work out what other people think. He tells both sides to stop running the court, and then he moves the whole matter somewhere neither of them can reach, which is God's own reception of the person.

That is not a way of finding out what the room thinks. It is a way of making the answer stop mattering, which is the only actual exit from a question with no floor.

You have already been received by the One whose reception is the only one that settles anything. He promised it, in the instruction to receive one another as Christ also received us (Romans 15:7), and His Spirit does not run a parallel assessment behind anybody's back.

The paragraph that outranks the teaching

Before we go on, this outranks everything above it.

Some people must not go without food, and this article is written for one of them, so let it be said very plainly. If you live with diabetes, if you are pregnant or nursing, if you take medication, if you have ever had a hard relationship with food or with eating, if you are underweight, unwell, frail or elderly, or if you are simply not sure, speak to your doctor first and let their answer be the answer, and let it be the end of the matter. There is no length on this page, no kind of fast, no plan and no schedule, and there is not going to be one here.

And your doctor's answer is not a lesser spiritual position. There is no version of this site on which the man who does it is further along than the man who does not. Everything here is written to you at full strength and nothing has been reduced for your benefit.

Privacy is about audience and never about hiding, too. Telling your doctor is right. Telling your wife is right. Telling whoever cooks in your house is right and it is basic courtesy. None of it fails anything.

You are not one step behind anybody in that hall, and you never were. Scripture settled that where God accepts according to what a person actually has (2 Corinthians 8:12), and the Spirit of God has never once been distributed by what anybody was cleared to do.

If today is heavier than a page can hold, call somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, or a crisis line, and the emergency services if you or anybody near you is in danger tonight.

A picture, not an account

Picture a man who could not swim and spent four summers on the shore of a lake with the same group of friends.

He never told them. He had a story about a shoulder, which was half true, and he used it every year, and nobody ever pushed.

And what he did instead was watch. He watched from the shore for four summers, and he became the person who noticed when somebody had gone too far out, and twice he was the reason somebody got called back in.

And the fourth year, one of the women said to him, drying off, entirely by the way: you know you are the reason we all still come here, don't you.

And he said, honestly baffled: I do not even go in the water.

And she said: no. That is why.

That is a picture, not an account. It is not a promise about your week or a claim about anybody's life. It is here because somebody needs to see what the person on the shore is actually doing in a group, which is almost never nothing and is almost never visible to the person doing it.

You are already doing something in that hall that nobody has a word for, and you were doing it from the first week. It is written into 1 Corinthians 12:18, where God sets the members in the body as it pleases Him, and the Holy Spirit does not station a man on the shore by accident.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it asks your body for nothing at all.

You are received, and it is already done, and it was not conditional on standing where everybody else is standing. Scripture settled that in one clause covering both directions of judgment (Romans 14:3), and the Holy Spirit is not part of any court that has been sitting in that hall for three weeks.

And I am not going to tell you the room is definitely not deciding. Rooms do decide, sometimes, about people, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest and you would spot it instantly.

What I will say is that Paul, who knew rooms very well, did not try to settle the question either. He moved it. And the reason he could move it is that the verdict everybody in that hall is unconsciously issuing has already been overruled by a higher one that was entered before any of them arrived.

One thing to do with your body

Say one honest sentence to one person in that room about not doing what they are doing. Then let the subject drop.

One sentence. Not the medical explanation, which you do not owe anybody and which would turn it into a defense. Something plainer: I am not doing this one, and it has been strange being on the outside of it.

And then let it drop. Do not wait for a response, do not manage their reaction, do not add anything. Change the subject yourself if you have to.

Because the thing that has been costing you is not the room. It is being the only person who knows you are outside it, and one sentence ends that, and it does not require the sixty.

That is the whole action, it takes nothing from your body, and a man eating three meals today can do it on Sunday. You are already free to say it plainly, and the freedom is already yours, and it does not need a reason attached. Romans 14:4 says so, where a man stands or falls to his own master and to nobody else's, and the Holy Spirit is with you at the door while it gets said.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in your own voice, wherever you are standing. The standing to speak like this is yours in Christ and it is not issued by anybody in any hall. Scripture is the ground under it and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely willing, and what God does in that church, and when, is His, however He answers.

Room that has been deciding about me, you are not my judge. Paul told both sides to stop and gave one reason for both, and the reason was that God had already received the man. In the name of Jesus I stop bracing at the door.
Question of whether they are assessing me, you are closed and you have no floor. It cannot be answered from inside and Paul did not try to answer it either, and His Spirit is settling that in me now.
Father, three weeks of standing in a room I am not in, and nobody has said one word. I thank You that You received me before any of them arrived and that Your reception overrules whatever is being decided. Here is one honest sentence on Sunday, and then I am letting it drop.
