She was three days in before she noticed, and what she noticed was her own voice.
She had joined because she wanted to be in something with other people. That was the whole motive and it was a clean one. She has been slightly lonely for about two years in a way she would not describe as loneliness because her life is full.
And on the third evening she heard herself finish somebody else's sentence with a better version of it.
Not maliciously. She would never. But there was a woman speaking, and she was hesitating, and there was a phrase available that would have said it properly, and she supplied it, and the room made the small approving sound that rooms make.
And she went home and sat in the car and understood exactly what she had done, because she has done it since she was about fourteen, in every classroom and every job and every dinner party and now in this.
She cannot be in a room without auditioning for it. She does not know how. She has never once found out what she is like in a group when she is not doing that.
If you know that voice, come and sit down. Nothing in here is being marked.

The joints are not doing anything anybody can watch
Here is Paul's image of how a body of people actually holds together, and the striking thing is what he says the mechanism is.
From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.Ephesians 4:16
By that which every joint supplieth.
Joints. Not performers. Not contributors, not voices, not the ones who say the good thing at the right moment. Joints, which are the least visible working parts in a body and the ones nobody has ever once applauded.
A joint does not produce anything. It does not have an output that could be assessed. Its entire function is connection: it holds two things together and it transmits between them, and if you tried to evaluate a knee on the quality of its material you would have missed what a knee is.
And that is what Paul says the growth of a body of people runs on. Not on the quality of what anybody supplies. On the connection between them.
Which means the phrase she supplied on the third evening, which was genuinely better than the woman's own, contributed nothing to the thing Paul is describing, and the four seconds she spent listening before she jumped in did.
You are being asked for connection rather than for output, and that was already the whole mechanism. Ephesians 4:16 is where that sits, in a picture built on joints rather than on parts anybody watches, and the same Spirit who moved Paul to reach for the least visible tissue in a body is the one who lets a performer sit down in a room.
What she has never been able to find out
Now the honest part, and it is the reason this matters more than an etiquette correction.
She said it herself in the car: she does not know what she is like in a group when she is not performing. That is not a small gap in self-knowledge. It is a hole where a whole part of her life should be.
And it is not fixable by resolving to be quieter, which she has tried, in her twenties, twice, and which produced a woman sitting in a room being visibly quiet, which is simply a different performance and is more tiring than the first one.
The way in is not restraint. It is that the room turns out not to need the supply.
Because that is what the fear is actually about. Underneath the auditioning is an assumption that she is welcome on the strength of what she brings, and that a version of her that brought nothing would be tolerated at best. Nobody ever said that to her. She arrived at it on her own at about fourteen and has never tested it since.
You have a place in that room that was not issued on the strength of anything you supply, and it was not on that basis when you walked in. He promised it, in the sentence about being accepted in the Beloved, where the acceptance rests on Him rather than on any contribution (Ephesians 1:6), and His Spirit does not evaluate a woman on what she says in a circle.
The paragraph that outranks the teaching
Before we go on, this outranks everything above it.
Some people must not go without food. If you live with diabetes, if you are pregnant or nursing, if you take medication, if you have ever had a hard relationship with food or with eating, if you are underweight, unwell, frail or elderly, or if you are simply not sure, speak to your doctor before you go without anything and let their answer be the answer. There is no length on this page, no kind of fast, no plan and no schedule, and there is not going to be one here.
And for somebody who auditions, one more sentence. Nothing on this site is a thing to be good at. If any of this ever turns into another room to perform in, put it down, and putting it down is not a failure either.
Nothing here makes the group version superior, either, and a reader who is in no group at all is not being handed a smaller portion. Privacy is about audience and never about hiding: telling your doctor is right, telling your husband is right, telling whoever cooks in your house is right, and none of it fails anything.
You have never been ranked in this or anywhere, and you never have been. Scripture settled that where God is named as no respecter of persons (Romans 2:11), and the Spirit of God has never once been apportioned by anybody's contribution.
If today is heavier than a page can hold, call somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, or a crisis line, and the emergency services if you or anybody near you is in danger tonight.
So here is the turn, and it costs your body nothing.
You are already joined to those people, and it is already what the word describes, and the joining was never about the quality of the supply. Scripture settled that in an image built on joints (Ephesians 4:16), and the Holy Spirit is not the audience you have been playing to since you were fourteen.
And the gift is real. You are quick, and the phrase you supplied was better, and none of that is being taken away from you or reclassified as a character flaw. Rooms are genuinely better for having somebody in them who can say the thing.
What is being offered is the other half: finding out, for the first time since adolescence, what you are actually like in a group, which is information you have simply never been able to get.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in your own voice, wherever you are sitting. The standing to speak like this is yours in Christ and it is not issued according to what anybody contributes. Scripture is the ground under it and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely willing, and what God does in that room, and when, is His, however He answers.
- Performance that starts the second I enter a room, you are not required here. Paul built the whole picture on joints, which are the least visible working parts in a body and which nobody has ever applauded. In the name of Jesus I am joining in without performing it.
- Assumption I arrived at when I was fourteen, you are named and you are not God's terms. Nobody ever told me I was welcome on the strength of what I bring, and His Spirit is settling that in me tonight.
- Father, three days in and I finished a woman's sentence with a better version of it. I thank You that I am accepted in the Beloved and that the acceptance never once rested on anything I said in a circle. Here is one evening, and I am staying to the end of it.
